Pesantren, Indonesia’s traditional Islamic boarding schools, hold a special place in the history and culture of the archipelago. These institutions not only serve as centers of religious learning but also function as guardians of tradition, bastions of morality, and, in many cases, catalysts for social change. In Lampung, the southern tip of Sumatra, pesantren affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, continue to thrive. Among them are some of the oldest pesantren, whose roots date back to the early 20th century or even earlier. These institutions have withstood the test of time and remain a vital part of the region’s educational and cultural fabric.

The exploration of these pesantren, which I term as “Jelajah Pesantren NU Tertua di Lampung” (Exploring the Oldest NU Pesantren in Lampung), offers not only a journey through the physical spaces of these institutions but also a deeper understanding of their historical, cultural, and spiritual significance. This initiative highlights the enduring legacy of these pesantren, their contributions to the spread of Islamic teachings, and their role in shaping the identity of Lampung society.

A Glimpse into Lampung’s Oldest NU Pesantren

Lampung’s connection to pesantren culture can be traced back to the arrival of Islamic scholars from Java, especially those linked to the Walisongo, the revered nine saints of Islam in Indonesia. Over time, these scholars established centers of learning in Lampung, blending Javanese Islamic traditions with local customs. Among these are the pesantren that later aligned themselves with Nahdlatul Ulama, an organization founded in 1926 to preserve traditional Islam and counter the growing influence of reformist movements.

One of the oldest NU-affiliated pesantren in Lampung is Pesantren Al-Hikmah, located in East Lampung. Founded in the early 1900s, Al-Hikmah stands as a testament to the enduring power of traditional Islamic education. This pesantren has produced generations of Islamic scholars, community leaders, and educators who have significantly contributed to the spiritual and social development of Lampung. Its curriculum, which combines classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) with contemporary subjects, reflects the NU’s commitment to maintaining the balance between tradition and modernity.

Another notable institution is Pesantren Roudlotul Ulum in Central Lampung, established in the 1920s. Like Al-Hikmah, Roudlotul Ulum has played a pivotal role in the dissemination of Islamic knowledge in the region. Its alumni network, spread across Lampung and beyond, is a testament to its influence and reach. The pesantren is also known for its preservation of Lampung’s unique cultural identity, integrating local traditions into its religious teachings.

The Role of NU Pesantren in Lampung’s Socio-Religious Landscape

The oldest NU pesantren in Lampung are more than just educational institutions; they are cultural and spiritual hubs that bind communities together. These pesantren are instrumental in preserving the traditional values of Islam while promoting tolerance and inclusivity. Their teachings emphasize the importance of akhlakul karimah (noble character), respect for diversity, and the need to uphold social harmony.

During Indonesia’s struggle for independence, many pesantren in Lampung served as centers of resistance against colonial forces. The kyai (Islamic scholars) and santri (students) of these pesantren were active participants in the fight for freedom, using their teachings to inspire courage and resilience among the people. Even today, the pesantren continue to play a role in fostering nationalism and a sense of pride in Indonesia’s Islamic heritage.

The NU pesantren in Lampung also act as agents of social change. They provide education to underprivileged communities, offering scholarships and other forms of support to ensure that everyone has access to quality Islamic education. Additionally, these pesantren are involved in various community development programs, from disaster relief efforts to initiatives aimed at improving health and sanitation in rural areas.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite their rich history and significant contributions, the oldest NU pesantren in Lampung face numerous challenges. One of the most pressing issues is the need to modernize their infrastructure and teaching methods without compromising their traditional values. Many pesantren lack adequate facilities, and their teachers often struggle with limited resources and support.

There is also the challenge of maintaining relevance in an era dominated by digital technology and globalization. Pesantren must find ways to incorporate modern technology into their curriculum while staying true to their mission of preserving traditional Islamic teachings. This requires a delicate balance, as any shift towards modernization must be carefully managed to avoid eroding the core values of the pesantren.

On the other hand, these challenges also present opportunities for growth and innovation. The increasing interest in Islamic education among Indonesia’s youth provides a fertile ground for pesantren to expand their reach and impact. By embracing digital tools and platforms, pesantren can enhance their teaching methods and connect with a wider audience. For example, online learning programs can help pesantren reach students in remote areas who may not have access to traditional educational institutions.

Preserving the Legacy of NU Pesantren in Lampung

The exploration of the oldest NU pesantren in Lampung is not just an academic exercise; it is a call to action. It is a reminder of the need to preserve these institutions as living monuments of Islamic education and culture. This can be achieved through various means, such as documenting their history, supporting their development, and raising awareness about their importance.

One way to preserve the legacy of these pesantren is by encouraging collaboration between pesantren and other educational institutions, both within and outside Indonesia. Such collaborations can provide pesantren with access to new resources and ideas, helping them to address their challenges and seize opportunities for growth. Additionally, government and private sector support is crucial in ensuring the sustainability of these institutions.

Another important step is to involve the younger generation in the preservation of pesantren culture. By introducing programs that promote the study of pesantren history and traditions, we can instill a sense of pride and responsibility among Indonesia’s youth. This will ensure that the legacy of the oldest NU pesantren in Lampung is passed on to future generations.

So, The oldest NU pesantren in Lampung are more than just centers of learning; they are beacons of hope, resilience, and spirituality. They represent the enduring power of Islamic education and its ability to adapt to changing times while staying true to its core values. As we embark on the journey of exploring these pesantren, we are reminded of the importance of preserving their legacy and supporting their growth.

Jelajah Pesantren NU Tertua di Lampung is not just an exploration of history; it is a celebration of the rich heritage of Islamic education in Indonesia. It is an opportunity to honor the contributions of these institutions and their role in shaping the identity of Lampung and its people. By preserving and supporting these pesantren, we ensure that their legacy continues to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
