The journal takes its name from “Oosthaven” (Dutch for “East Port”), a historical reference to the colonial-era name for Bandar Lampung, reflecting the journal’s commitment to both historical depth and critical inquiry. Oosthaven aims to serve as an open-access platform for rigorous and original research that bridges disciplines and cultural contexts within the broader study of Islam and Muslim societies.

By bringing together voices from different academic and cultural backgrounds, Oosthaven embodies a vision of inclusive and critical scholarship, fostering new understandings of the Islamic world across time and geography.

The journal aims to serve as an inclusive platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to publish innovative work that deepens the understanding of Islam’s historical and cultural trajectories in Southeast Asia and beyond.

“We are proud to present a journal that reflects the depth and diversity of Islamic cultural studies, not just within Indonesia, but in a global context,” said the editorial board Wahyu Iryana in a joint statement.

Oosthaven is currently open for submissions for its upcoming issues. Researchers and scholars interested in Islamic history, manuscript studies, cultural anthropology, and related fields are encouraged to contribute.
